"Even the most common security devices, deadlocks and window locks, greatly reduce the risk of being burgled.  Those who additionally have burglar alarms, security lights or window grilles reduce their risks further".

1. Deadlocks
Cheap to buy, relatively easy to fit. You can order deadlocks over the internet (we hope to provide such a service ourselves shortly). Alternatively, we can arrange for a reputable locksmith to contact you: they can undertake a review of the locks on your property and advise you on how to improve this aspect of your security. Use our "request for help" form. Don't just wait for a burglar to find the weak points - make sure a locksmith gets there first!

2. Window locks and grilles
Window locks are again cheap and generally easy to fit. Contact us and we'll arrange for a reputable locksmith to contact you, if you'd rather not fit them yourself. Alternatively, you may want to consider installing new, lockable windows with double glazing. Although a more expensive option, you may feel that the additional security (and warmth!) it offers are worthwhile.

3. Burglar alarms
There are broadly three types of burglar alarms: self-install bell, company installed bell, and monitored.  If you feel able to install your own alarm, you can view and order a selection at Security World.  However, this is appropriate only for the more proficient, and rarely provides the highest levels of security.  If you want someone to install an alarm for you, your choice is between "bell" and "monitored".   The "bell" version will, when triggered, ring a bell (!) and flash lights: however, you then rely on a neighbour or passer-by contacting the police.  The "monitored" alarm will, when triggered, alert a monitoring station, who will (after checking that it is not a false alarm) contact the police.  The "monitored" alarm has an excellent reputation for protecting property: we have a page detailing the UK's leading burglar alarm companies.

4. Security lights
Cheap to buy.  Timers for internal lights can be very easy to fit, whilst outside security lights will probably need to be installed by a competent electrician.  Remember to fit external security lights around your property, not just at the front.  For self-installation, Security World hold a range of suitable internal and external devices.

5. Neighbourhood Watch and property marking
Join your local Neighbourhood Watch group - or, if you don't have one, set one up.  Put the Neighbourhood Watch sticker prominently in your window.

You should also mark your property - especially electrical items such as TV and video - with your postcode.  Your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme, or your local police station, may be able to lend you an invisible marker for this. Our property marking pages have more detail.

Make a list of key items that you own, and keep it up to date.  Our property checklist can provide you with a first reference for this.
