If you leaf through any telephone directory, you will find
a long list of companies willing to install burglar alarms
or security systems for you. Some offer only "bell"
systems, whilst others are able (often in association with
other companies) both "bell" and "monitored".
Membership of one of the relevant trade associations (SSAIB,
NACOSS, BSIA) is a helpful indicator of reliability and professionalism
for these smaller firms.
The UK's leading domestic security alarm firms are ADT, Chubb
and (a recent entrant) British Gas. Each provides a
monitored alarm service, as well as an installation service.
ADT is owned by Tyco International, easily the world's
largest security services company, whilst Chubb is
owned by Williams plc, the world's second largest security
services company. Both ADT and Chubb operate worldwide.
The British Gas Home Security arm is a part of Centrica
(British Gas's parent company, also owns the AA and the Goldfish
credit card brand), and operates primarily in the UK.
The cost of installing an alarm clearly varies depending on
the size of your house! Monthly monitoring charges also
vary, though they tend to be around the £30 per month mark. Whatever
the cost, it is certainly true that monitored alarms offer
greater peace of mind: research suggests that only around
one in ten bell-only alarms activations are actually reported
to the police.
